CAMP LEO – for children with diabetes

Camp Leo’s mission aligns perfectly with Lions Clubs International’s commitment to diabetes awareness and support, making it a cause of utmost importance to our organization
Camp Leo: A Haven for Children with Type 1 Diabetes
Camp Leo stands out as the only overnight camp in Western Washington exclusively dedicated to children with Type 1 Diabetes. This unique camp provides a safe and nurturing environment where young individuals can learn, grow, and connect with others who share similar experiences.
A Community of Understanding
What sets Camp Leo apart is its exceptional staff, many of whom have firsthand experience with Type 1 Diabetes. Kristi Nelson, along with other counselors and medical staff, are living examples of thriving with the condition. The camp also welcomes adult siblings and partners of those with diabetes as volunteers, creating a diverse and empathetic support system.
Empowering Through Education
Camp Leo goes beyond a summer retreat; it empowers campers to:
- Learn self-care skills
- Build confidence
- Form friendships
- Gain independence in managing their condition
The Lions Club Connection
The bond between Camp Leo and the Lions Club is strong, with several Mineral Lake Lions Club members volunteering in various roles, highlighting our commitment to supporting communities affected by diabetes.
Impressive Staff-to-Camper Ratio
Camp Leo maintains a minimum ratio of one adult staff member for every four campers, often achieving a 1:2 ratio for younger participants, ensuring personalized attention and care.
